Going on holiday, or taking a business trip? Your Ulster Bank Debit card can be a safe and convenient payment method to make transactions abroad.

Ulster Bank Debit cards are accepted at 30 million retail outlets and 1 million ATMs worldwide.

To use your debit card, just look for the Visa or Mastercard logo in retailers or on cash machines next time you are abroad, and then use your card as normal.

Ulster Bank Secure protects your card against unauthorised use when you shop online.

How does it work?

Good News! We have enhanced our Ulster Bank Secure service. When shopping online you will no longer need to enter a password, most transactions will simply go straight through after being checked by the bank. For some transactions you may be asked to enter a one time passcode online which we will send to you. You can select whether you wish this passcode to be sent to your mobile, email address or via a voicemail to your landline. Ulster Bank Secure provides you with additional protection when shopping online at participating merchants.

To ensure you can complete online purchases quickly it is essential that you keep your contact details up to date, so if verification is requested we can send you a one time passcode.

How do I register?

It’s free to register. You may be asked to register whilst completing a purchase. If you don’t register, your transaction may be declined as part of our anti-fraud policy.

If you pay for goods/services and they fail to arrive or are damaged, we can help recover the payment. This includes purchases from companies that have gone into administration and online purchases where the goods have not been received.

Pay for those small, everyday items up to £100 just by tapping your card on the terminal in shops, restaurants, cinemas and almost everywhere else. Paying with contactless is an easier and faster way to pay.

Keeping your payments safe

To check it’s really you when using contactless, you’ll occasionally be asked to input your PIN when you present your card - it’s just another way to keep you safe and protect your payments.

You can now use your mobile app to turn off contactless, chip and PIN and online & telephone payments and turn them on again instantly. If you don’t use your card online or for contactless payments turn the control on in your app and turn it off again if you change your mind.

Available card types

There are three types of cards – serviceCARD, debitCARDs and cashCARDs

debitCARDs

Pay for goods and services at home, abroad and withdraw cash worldwide.

With debitCARDs, every transaction is checked for available funds. However, this means that the card can’t be used at merchants who are unable to connect to the Bank's systems.

Most merchants can connect, examples of those who can’t include unattended petrol pumps and some card terminals on planes and trains.

serviceCARDs

Pay for goods and services at home, abroad and withdraw cash worldwide.
Pay using Contactless wherever you see the Contactless symbol.

ServiceCARDs have all the functionality of debitCARDs, but can also be used at merchants who are unable to connect to the Bank's systems. ServiceCARDs check every transaction for available funds, but if they can’t connect, the payment should still go through.

Common questions

My card expires soon, when should I receive a replacement?

Your replacement card will arrive at least one week before the existing card is due to expire.

The date on which your card will expire is the last day of the month in the year printed on the front of your card. It is shown as 'Expires End MM/YY'.

Please begin to use your replacement card as soon as it has arrived and securely destroy your old card.

Please remember to amend any existing payments you have set up with your old card number such as magazine subscriptions, online shopping sites or annual insurance renewals.

My card is damaged, what should I do?

If you need to replace a broken or damaged debit card please call telephone banking using the same Security Details as Online Banking or contact a branch.

How do I change the name on my card?

I have lost my card and need cash, what can I do?

If your debit card is lost or stolen, simply call us on 0370 600 0459* and we’ll give you a code to use at any Ulster Bank ATM in Northern Ireland. You can withdraw up to £300 if you are an Anytime Banking customer, or up to £60 if you're not (provided the money is available in your account). We will also cancel your card at the same time.

You need to have a minimum of £20 in your account to use the service.

My PIN is blocked, what should I do?

If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times in a row at any retailer, you will need to unlock your PIN at any Ulster Bank, RBS, NatWest or any ATM displaying the Link logo by selecting 'Account Services' and 'Unlock PIN'. A message will be displayed to confirm that you have unlocked your PIN.

Don't know your PIN? Contact your branch who will need to send you a 're-advice' of your PIN. Once you receive this, please follow the above instructions to unlock the PIN.

If you enter your PIN incorrectly 3 times in a row at an ATM, you will need to ask the branch to send you a 're-advice' of your PIN.
